The Importance of Service Lines Inspection for Your Home
At Tri-County Inspections, we know that a thorough home inspection includes looking at all aspects of a property—both inside and out. In a recent video, our inspector, Mike Vakos, discussed a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of home safety: Service Lines Inspection. Whether it’s electrical, phone, or cable lines, understanding their impact on your home is essential.
Why a Service Lines Inspection Matters
During a Service Lines Inspection, one common issue we find is contact between service lines and the home’s exterior. In the video, Mike highlights an older home where phone and cable lines are rubbing against the shingles. Over time, this friction can lead to damage, increasing the risk of leaks and structural issues.
Another critical concern is electrical service lines. If these lines come into direct contact with metal or aluminum siding, they can arc and electrify the home’s exterior, creating a hazardous situation for anyone nearby. This is why ensuring that service lines are properly positioned and secured is a key aspect of any home inspection.
Common Issues Found in a Service Lines Inspection
- Rubbing Against Roof or Siding – Can cause wear and tear, leading to leaks or further damage.
- Loose or Sagging Lines – May indicate improper installation or age-related deterioration.
- Electrical Service Line Contact – If touching the house, it poses a potential safety hazard, especially with metal siding.

From Mike Vakos, owner and Lead home inspector:
"Hey guys Mike here with Tri County inspections and in today's video I wanted to talk to you real quick about service lines coming into the property. Whether it's electrical service lines orcable phone service lines as you can see we're here in sunny Ohio area, nice snow covered grass. Anyways I see this a lot: an older home that has service lines coming in and a lot of people you know ask, "well what's the big deal?" These are actually phone and cable lines but if you can see when these are touching the house they rub against the shingles and they damage them and then you have a potential for other issues like leaks and things like that. So that's why it's always important to not have any service lines touching your house, especially electrical service lines cuz those can technically Arc and Electrify the house, especially ifit's metal siding or aluminum siding. So anyways, that's just one of the things that welook at...Mike with Tri County inspections and that's one more reason to get a homeinspection. Stay warm."
